Volunteer Tasks

The Open Knowledge Foundation (http://www.okfn.org) is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes knowledge that can be freely used, reused and redistributed - from sonnets to statistics, genes to geodata. It hosts a wide variety of volunteer driven projects and working groups that aim to produce and distribute open knowledge.

Whether you are interested in finding literary works and sound recordings in the public domain, making interactive visualisations of socioeconomic data, or in sharing textbooks for educational projects - there is sure to be something of interest! Current projects requiring volunteers can be found at http://www.okfn.org/projects and include:

• Open Shakespeare and Open Milton: complete editions of Shakespeare and Milton's works along with tools for analysing the texts - freely available for anyone to use or share. We need volunteers to proof edit and format texts, or even to create an original book cover design for a print edition of the plays!
• Open Economics "Where Does My Money Go": developer and researcher needed to develop prize-winning "Where Does My Money Go" project proposal which aims to help citizens make sense of UK government finance.
• European Open Data Inventory: Just launched in Brussels - the project aims to track down and document official information from public bodies across Europe. Get stuck into the budgets, socioeconomic information, environmental data or parliamentary transcripts behind the headlines!

Micro Tasks

1. Help us formulate new goals and ideas -- take a look around the main website and this wiki to see if you have any suggestions

• The wiki is editable by anyone so please feel free to add to (or correct!) anything you come across
• For the main website please add comments to WebsiteRedesign or email info@okfn.org
• If you don't know how to edit a wiki don't worry just take a look at HelpOnEditing

2. Tag open knowledge resources on del.icio.us (or other bookmarking site)

• Just add the tag "okfn" plus one of "openknowledge", "opendata", "opencontent" etc
• For sizeable resources (e.g. a decent-sized dataset) add the tag "ckan"

3. Producing open material? Then add open knowledge/data/content button to your site

• Instructions (5 minutes max)

4. Proof-edit a bit of OCR'd texts such at this Shakespeare entry from the 11th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica

If you have more time

• Become an Editor for Open Text Book: 2 posts a month (~ 30m per week)
• Become a [http:/www.ckan.net/ CKAN] package manager: (0.5-1h per week)
• Want to code and have an hour a week to spare? Help us improve one of our core projects by adding new features
• More generally: you can get involved in any one of our projects or working groups -- or even propose a new one.
