19:02 -!- Iain [~chatzilla@78.149.217.127] has joined #okfn
19:04 < rgrp> ok we can kick off i think
19:05 < jwyg> joss_: sorry - was just in the middle of finishing off some emails...
19:06 < rgrp> np
19:06 < rgrp> ok plan today is to finish in record time and keep this reasonably short
19:06 < rgrp> maybe combine this with having more regular irc meetings :)
19:06 < rgrp> agenda at: <http://okfn.org/wiki/meetings/2008-04>
19:08 < jwyg> great
19:08 < rgrp> 1. OKCon -- post event updates
19:08 < rgrp> okcon was enjoyed by all i think
19:08 < rgrp> jwyg: jonathan i know you've mainly been dealing with post event stuff
19:08 < rgrp> anything particular to report
19:09 < jwyg> apart from post-event information page...
19:09 < jwyg> http://blog.okfn.org/2008/04/02/okcon-2008-documentation-and-open-knowledge-local-groups/
19:09 < rgrp> the only thing i was wondering was whether we had missed any post event coverage on blogs etc
19:09 < jwyg> i will have another sweep around on tecnorati
19:10 < rgrp> there is also google blog search (which i think is sometimes better): http://blogsearch.google.com/
19:10 < jwyg> ok great
19:11 < rgrp> a big thank you to everyone who helped out esp Adnan who dealt with the footage and saul who helped record it and do the audio
19:11 < jwyg> video is very large
19:11 < rgrp> but on archive.org :)
19:11 < jwyg> i know!
19:11 < jwyg> ;-)
19:12 < jwyg> that could be edited down at some point... but might be a bit expensive...
19:12 < rgrp> jwyg: could be but i'm not sure about the cost/benefit -- maybe if someone wanted to volunteer and had time on their hands ... :)
19:13 < jwyg> exactly, perhaps we could put it on the todo list
19:13 < jwyg> we should also have more categories on todo list
19:13 < rgrp> jwyg: you mean like priorities?
19:13 < jwyg> high/medium/low priority + ongoing
19:13 < jwyg> exactly
19:13 < jwyg> anyhow...
19:14 < rgrp> ok let's leave this item and move on to the meatier ones
19:14 < jwyg> great
19:14 < rgrp> Open Shakespeare and Open Milton: update discussion
19:14 < jwyg> this is really exciting
19:14 < rgrp> Iain: i know this is why you are here.
19:14 < rgrp> we are making great progess thanks to your efforts
19:15 < rgrp> i am also planning to start spending more time on OS again
19:16 < rgrp> i'd like to propose having a dedicated Open Shakespeare/Milton planning session.
19:16 < jwyg> Iain: are you there?
19:16 < rgrp> we have a trac installation to use for this
19:16 < rgrp> http://kforge.net/shakespeare/trac/milestone/0.5
19:17 < jwyg> great
19:17 < jwyg> i think it would also be great to have a mini hackathon for this
19:17 < rgrp> exactly
19:18 < jwyg> perhaps a few hours on a weeknight, a bit like with ckan thing
19:18 < rgrp> unfortunately Iain seems to have disappeared here ...
19:18 < jwyg> its on my list to step up efforts contacting relevant people in academe etc
19:19 < rgrp> that's actually a ticket :0
19:19 < rgrp> http://kforge.net/shakespeare/trac/query?status=new&status=assigned&status=reopened&milestone=0.5
19:20 < rgrp> perhaps we should create a mini events page for stuff like this on the wiki
19:20 < rgrp> we could also plan in meetings etc in advance more ...
19:20 < jwyg> yes - i'd like that
19:21 < rgrp> have you taken a look at the tickets: <http://kforge.net/shakespeare/trac/query?status=new&status=assigned&status=reopened&milestone=0.5>
19:22 < jwyg> i hadn't recently - great
19:22 < jwyg> i like the text stats ticket
19:23 < jwyg> what about word frequency clouds?
19:23 < jwyg> ;-)
19:23 < rgrp> what do you mean by a cloud?
19:23 < rgrp> do you mean like a tag cloud?
19:23 < Iain> msg sorry having connection issues
19:23 < rgrp> that's pretty easy once we have the data
19:23 < rgrp> Iain: sorry to hear that
19:24 < rgrp> what was the last thing you read?
19:24 < jwyg> see e.g. http://chir.ag/phernalia/preztags/
19:24 < Iain> The "word cloud" - good idea
19:25 < jwyg> someone's written a script for this we could modify
19:25 < rgrp> Iain have you seen the trac instance: http://kforge.net/shakespeare/trac/roadmap
19:25 < jwyg> http://chir.ag/tech/download/tagline/
19:25 < Iain> Not in the last couple of weeks. Must refresh myself on that
19:26 < Iain> openMilton nearly there - think I've figured the last issue for version 0.1
19:26 < rgrp> Iain: do commit your stuff into svn -- that way others (like me :) ) can see stuff more easily
19:27 < rgrp> are you happy to use it like that
19:27 < jwyg> Iain: great news!
19:27 < rgrp> ditto: that's fantastic!
19:28 < Iain> Once the issue is resolved then yes, I'm happy. If not, can I commit it for other eyes?
19:28 < Iain> Thanks.
19:28 < rgrp> Iain: you should feel free to commit when there are issues :)
19:28 < rgrp> that's exactly what's good abut using svn is that it will store every change so you update things and still go back if necessary
19:29 < Iain> I need to tidy up. not the neatest of coders ;-)
19:29 < rgrp> :)
19:29 < rgrp> sure, but the motto of svn here is the same as wikipedia: 'be bold'
19:30 < rgrp> you don't need to wait for it to be perfect before committing :)
19:31 < Iain> Okay, okay, I'll commit over the weekend. Promise.
19:31 < rgrp> :)
19:31 < rgrp> it also makes it easier for me to provide fixes if there are problems
19:32 < rgrp> anyway we should schedule a proper bit of type -- a mini hackathon on OS/OM stuff
19:32 < rgrp> i've just put up: http://okfn.org/wiki/MiniEvents
19:32 < jwyg> great
19:33 < jwyg> i was wondering whether it might be worth making an Events page on wiki - into which we put everything, and link to - a little like our Research page?
19:33 < rgrp> Iain: as the main other contributor when would be a good time to do a code 'sprint'
19:34 < rgrp> jywg: might be a good idea though it might be simpler to aggregate some things (like the 'event' feed on the blog)
19:35 < Iain> rgrp: I can do this Saturday or 26th? Perhaps 26th better if I commit over the weekend?
19:35 < rgrp> i think 26th is better
19:36 < Iain> I'll ink it into my paper-base diary
19:36 < rgrp> ok we'll announce that to the list. meet on irc in the afternoon and have a go at fixing things up
19:36 < jwyg> suits me!
19:36 < rgrp> (i've been itching to do the stats and play around with xapian)
19:37 < rgrp> great, ok that's OS/OM closed for time being i think
19:38 < rgrp> on ckan front we've had a substantial increase in traffic recently thanks to quite a bit of net coverage
19:38 < jwyg> what kinds of monthly traffic?
19:39 < rgrp> <http://eu0.okfn.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=ckan.net>
19:39 < rgrp> 75k hits so far this month
19:39 < rgrp> 5141 unique visitors
19:40 < rgrp> as you can see substantal peek following 7th of april discussions on various blogs
19:40 < rgrp> i think we should do another package sprint
19:41 < rgrp> we should also make efforts to take forward complementary applications e.g. tools to 'plug in' to ckan to support automated downloading, automated upload etc
19:41 < jwyg> me too!
19:41 < jwyg> browser plugin?
19:42 < jwyg> perhaps this could be worth trying to seed using cofundos...
19:42 < rgrp> that would be really cool -- though i don't know too much about browser plugins
19:42 < rgrp> we should definitely put an item on cofundos
19:43 < rgrp> action: (jwyg) add ckan item to cofundos
19:44 < jwyg> i'll look into circulating this in relevant communities
19:44 < jwyg> also i think we should really promote ckan package party hard
19:44 < jwyg> blog it well in advance
19:44 < rgrp> i'm not sure we need to do that much there
19:44 < rgrp> the package party is going to be more for enthusiasts but i agree we should blog it
19:44 < rgrp> last time we did really pretty welll
19:45 < jwyg> 's true.
19:45 < jwyg> i've noticed several posts from librarians about ckan/open data.
19:45 < rgrp> action: (rgrp) post to list about next ckan package party suggesting dates
19:46 < rgrp> jwyg: yes, where?
19:46 < jwyg> could we doodle this too? ;-)
19:46 < rgrp> be good to send that kind of info to okfn-discuss
19:46 < rgrp> jwyg: yes
19:46 < jwyg> true - will do
19:48 < rgrp> ok: on to local knowledge gorups
19:48 < rgrp> jwyg: i know you've got one organized in london
19:48 < rgrp> i will be doing one in cambridge some time in next couple of months
19:48 < rgrp> what about oxford?
19:49 < jwyg> i haven't been onto nate yet, but i think he's started the wiki page
19:49 < jwyg> i'll take a look at this properly over the weekend
19:49 < jwyg> i'd like to try organising an open archeology event there - if there's enough interest
19:49 < rgrp> that would be a great idea
19:50 < rgrp> i think with nate absent from this meeting we should defer the oxford stuff
19:50 < jwyg> agreed
19:50 < jwyg> working hard on visualisation workshop
19:50 < rgrp> though i note Iain is on the Oxford list :)
19:50 < rgrp> there was also a librarian from Okcon whose card i have
19:50 < Iain> Because I'm based in Oxford :-)
19:50 < rgrp> well that's great
19:51 < rgrp> would you be interested in helping organize an ok local meeting in oxford?
19:51 < jwyg> rgrp: which library?
19:51 < rgrp> one of the colleges, i need to check ...
19:51 < jwyg> Iain: I thought you were based in London!
19:52 < Iain> Sure. I think I know which librarian if its Worcester. I need to email him at some point.
19:52 < Iain> No, here but the London group looked interesting...
19:52 < rgrp> Worcester, that's right
19:53 < Iain> Would you like me to ask him about joining the group?
19:53 < rgrp> Iain: good idea
19:53 < jwyg> that would be great
19:53 < rgrp> also if you guys want a mailing list e.g. ok-ox-announce ok-ox-discuss etc
19:53 < rgrp> just say and we can put one up
19:53 < jwyg> it could also be good to touch base with any f/oss groups
19:54 < rgrp> just like we can have ok-london-announce and the like
19:54 < rgrp> jp stacey is a man who you should also probably include in the group -- plus he organizes oxford geek night
19:54 < Iain> I was thinking of him oddly enough. A mailing list would be good
19:55 < rgrp> ok what would you like: ok-ox-announce or ...?
19:55 < Iain> ok-ox-discuss? It sounds like two way dialogue
19:56 < rgrp> sounds great
19:56 < rgrp> twill be done
19:56 < Iain> Thanks
19:56 < rgrp> action: (sysadmin/rgrp): create ok-ox-discuss with iain + jwyg as administrator
19:56 < jwyg> great
19:56 < rgrp> ok, we should wrap up here i think to try to keep it to the hour :)
19:57 < rgrp> we'll leave open economics update for time being
19:57 < jwyg> rgrp: just quickly
19:57 < rgrp> tho' you can see <http://www.openeconomics.net/plot/chart/?ycol0=2&data_url=http%3A%2F%2Flocalhost%3A8081%2Fstore%2F517d7c4e-3cb7-4e8f-aaa1-745dd665ad1f%2Fdata>
19:57 < rgrp> us wheat acreage from 1866 to present day (see the opening of the prairies in late 19th century)
19:57 < rgrp> just change ycol0 to other values to plot other columns
19:58 < rgrp> jwyg: other stuff?
19:58 < jwyg> thats really great
