This document describes in summary terms the interactive visualization planned for the Where Does My Money Go? project. Our intention is to keep the model simple, usable and scalable, and features are defined with this principle in mind.

Available data

Data is divided up into regions, functions, and sub-functions. We want to show relative budgets by region and function. The trick is to draw comparisons between multiple dimensions in as simple a way possible. We intend to combine four different models, presented concurrently.

Concept should allow drill-down to:

Concurrently, the visualization should show expenditure over time, as time-series graphs and animations as necessary.

Visualization

A geographical map to show regional divisions

Use the map as cartogram to show how budget is divided, per capita.

On drill-down into sub-function

On filter by comparative function

Combined data for time series

Interactivity

Filter by function

Use checkboxes for initial filter by function, see below.

Drill-down on sub-function

When only one function is selected, drill-down to sub-function will be possible.

Affordances (EITHER/OR)

Comparison by function and region

When more than one function is selected, bubbles can be displayed as pie charts, showing relative expenditure. This comparison works on regional drill-down throughout England.

Timeline control

A timeline slider to navigate/animate the cartogram over the relevant time period. This should tie in with the time series bar chart.

Regions

Nine regional divisions in England:

  1. North East
  2. North West
  3. Yorkshire and Humberside
  4. East Midlands
  5. West Midlands
  6. Eastern
  7. London
  8. South East
  9. South West

Functions

  1. General public services
  2. Defence
  3. Public order and safety
  4. Economic affairs
  5. Environment protection
  6. Housing and community amenities
  7. Health
  8. Recreation, culture and religion
  9. Education (includes training)
  10. Social protection
